Knife Gate Valve - Operating Principle

Knife gate valves operate by opening and closing the fluid passage via a gate (blade) that moves perpendicular to the flow direction between two sealing rings.

Operation in the fully open or fully closed position is preferred.

Knife Gate Valves - Application Areas and Sealing;

This valve type is particularly suitable for use with fibrous fluids, such as in the paper industry and wastewater lines. It ensures complete sealing through its single- or two-piece body and elastomer (EPDM, NBR, NR, Viton, Teflon, Metal) seat. They are available in various configurations: handwheel-operated, gearbox-operated, chain-wheel operated, pneumatic actuator-operated, hydraulic actuator-operated, and electric actuator-operated. Options include rising stem, non-rising stem, and through-conduit knife gate valves.

Knife Gate Valves - Advantages;
- When fully open, the valve offers very low flow resistance and ensures a smooth passage.
- They can be used for flow in either direction.
- The valve can be installed in any position; however, a vertical stem orientation with the handwheel at the top is preferred.
- They feature a short face-to-face dimension, even in large nominal diameters. - They are cost-effective and readily available.
- They are easy to maintain.
